And how to bring one of Colorado’s most unforgettable hot springs experiences home
If you’re looking for one of the most authentic hot springs experiences in Colorado, we highly recommend Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort.
Nestled between Buena Vista and Salida in the stunning Arkansas River Valley, Mount Princeton offers something that feels far beyond a traditional resort pool. Here, steaming geothermal water rises from deep beneath the earth and meets the icy mountain runoff of Chalk Creek—creating one of the most unique soaking experiences in the Rockies.
Why Is It Called Chalk Creek?
Chalk Creek gets its name from the pale mineral deposits that line parts of the creek and surrounding rock.
Over centuries, mineral-rich geothermal water—loaded with calcium, silica, sulfur compounds, and other dissolved earth minerals—has surfaced through the mountains here. As those minerals cool and settle, they leave behind light-colored deposits that give parts of the creek a chalk-like appearance.
It’s part of what makes this valley feel so raw and untouched.
The Famous Creekside Pools
This is where Mount Princeton becomes unforgettable.
Instead of only soaking in resort pools, you can actually walk down to the creek itself, where little stone soaking pockets line the edges of the water.
These separated pools are one of our favorite features in all of Colorado.
Hot geothermal water pours into the creek from the mountainside, while fresh snowmelt keeps the creek water incredibly cold.
That contrast creates something magical:
Move a little too far one direction... and it’s steaming hot.
Move a little too far the other... and it’s mountain-stream cold.
But find the sweet spot—and it’s perfect.
Nature basically lets you tune your own hot spring.
Want to Bring Chalk Creek Home?
After visiting Chalk Creek, we knew we had to recreate that experience.
That’s why we created our High Country Bath Chalk Creek Mineral Bath Blend—inspired by the mineral character of this incredible canyon.
Our goal wasn’t to make “just another bath salt.”
We wanted to capture the feeling of sitting creekside beneath the mountains—hot mineral water on one side, cold mountain air on the other.
Our Chalk Creek blend was designed to reflect the region’s mineral personality, helping you bring a little piece of Colorado home with every soak.
Because not every day can be spent in the mountains…
…but your bath can still feel like it.
A Bonus Adventure: St. Elmo Ghost Town
If road conditions are good and there isn’t too much snow, take the drive farther up the canyon to St. Elmo Ghost Town.
Founded in the 1880s during Colorado’s mining boom, St. Elmo feels like stepping back in time.
And yes—the old general store is still there.
Inside you’ll find:
- Old-fashioned candy
- Souvenirs
- Historic photos
- Rustic mountain charm
And if you’re lucky, some very friendly chipmunks.
Our Recommendation
If you’re planning a Colorado hot springs road trip, Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort deserves a spot near the top of your list.
Between the creekside soaking pools, the incredible mountain scenery, and a trip to St. Elmo Ghost Town, it’s one of the most memorable hot springs destinations in Colorado.
And when you get home…
Don’t forget you can always recreate a little of that mountain magic with our High Country Bath Chalk Creek Mineral Bath Blend.
